Prep N Prime is a CTA-Sika product, specially made and designed for use on smooth and non-porous surfaces. Letting you tile over existing tiles, puddle flanges and other surface settings that are difficult to adhere to. Builders, contractors and DIY renovators love this product as an alternative to mechanical grinding and acid etching to prime surfaces for adhesion.Use Prep and Prime For:
- Prime over existing tiles (ceramic, porcelain, terracotta, concrete, stone, etc.)
- Prime a surface before applying a Sika-approved waterproof membrane
- Prime over smooth and nonporous substrates
- Prime puddle flangs and other metal surfaces
Prep and Prime is not suitable for:
- Not suitable for immersed water environments such as pools or spas
- Not suitable for waterproofing membranes unless they are Sika approved (need to go into more detail here)
What makes this product special?
Prep and Prime is a water based primer, instead of solvent based. This means that it is has low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that make it more user-friendly as well as safer on the environment. Volatile organic compounds are organic chemicals like carbon that can lead to irritation, headaches, or respiratory problems when exposed in the air, especially for a prolonged amount of time. Compared to solvents or otherwise known as oil-based or alkyd-based primers, water based primers today like Prep and Prime offer superior levelling and durability. On top of that, Prep and Prime also has a faster drying time; allowing you to start tiling in the same day. Drying Time
- 40 mins – 1 Hour Priming over existing tiles
- 1 hour + Priming over non-porous substrates & puddle flangs
- 3-5 hours Priming before waterproofing
Best Application
For the best application, it is recommended to sand or grind substrate beforehand. This is to improve the adhesion of the epoxy coatings used prior to applying Prep n Prime. On metal surfaces, etch the metal surface with steel wool and then clean with isopropyl alcohol before applying Prep n Prime. The formula comes premixed, but it is still recommended to stir Prep N Prime to ensure no coagulation. Application is easy! Simply apply Prep N Prime with a brush or roller.Pre Treating the Surface/Substrate
Before using Prep N Prime, it is important that you ensure that the surface is clean, dry, and uninterrupted by dust, grease and oil. For more information about what contaminants that can interrupt Prep N Prime’s bond to look for, read the product data sheet provided here. You can wipe down the area with a damp sponge to get rid of any dust in the area before using Prep N Prime. It is also important that plasterboards or any other type of flexible building board that you are looking to prep is first fixed according to manufacturer instructions.Sika-Approved Waterproofing Membranes
Prep and Prime manufacturers CTA and Sika have recommended that the product is not suitable for waterproofing membranes that are not Sika approved.
