How do you use Maxisil Silicone?

Builders, contractors, and home renovators love Maxisil Silicone to create an airtight and watertight seal between bathroom fixtures and tiles. Maxisil A Silicone assists in keeping out mould and fungi in these areas, for maintaining a proper level of cleanliness and hygiene in the bathroom.  While Maxisil N Silicone create efficient expansion and control joints, that help deal with stress and pressure from movement in the building. Helping prevent cracks from developing or to direct them to away to joint lines, to leave planes free of cracks. Maxisil A Silicone can often be a choice for grouting ceramic tiles in the bathroom or kitchen. As a flexible material, it can move with the expansions and contractions expected of ceramic tile.

Product limitations

When it comes to grouting tiles in a plane, grout is often the ideal. However, silicone is the adhesive of choice when tiling the joints between corners or walls and floors.  All silicone, including Maxisil Silicone, requires more precision to use. A lack of attentiveness can mean silicone sticking to surfaces or areas where you do not want it to go. Some tilers have found that using masking tape to section off some of the surrounding area a great help for achieving clean, precise silicone application.

Acetic-based vs Neutral-based Silicone

When looking for silicone, you will often find ‘acetic’ or ‘neutral’ listed as an important component of the product. This is what it means.

Acetic based silicone

Acetic based silicone releases acetic acid while curing, which makes it known for a strong vinegar smell. This means that is has a very fast cure time. But it can also be corrosive and harmful on certain substrates and metals. If in doubt, you can get in touch with one of our specialists for more technical advice.   Acetic based Maxisil Silicone is often an ideal solution for -
  • Windows and door frames
  • Kitchen backsplashes
  • Countertop sealing
  • Showers, bathtubs & toilets

Neutral based silicone

Neutral based silicones don’t have the same smell that acetic acid silicone has when it cures. It has only a low odour, but it cures at a slower rate than acetic silicone.  Neutral based Maxisil Silicone is often an ideal solution for -
  • Natural Stone
  • Pavers
  • Expansion Joints
  • Pools
  • Water Fountains

Maxisil Silicone for Joints

Expansion Joints – Expansion or movement joints are designed systems in a building to allow walls or floors to thermally expand. As a strong and flexible substrate, Maxisil Silicone makes an ideal solution for creating vertical wall expansion joints in the kitchen or bathroom. It moves with the natural movement of your building for lasting durability.  Control Joints – These joints can be either installed during or after the installation of construction materials. Control joints more help alleviate the stress from movement in the building from smaller movement caused by the absorption or expulsion of water from concrete. When concrete moves, it means only minimal cracks will travel along the joints instead of heavy crooked cracks across the slab.  Articulation Joints – Near a door or window, you will often see a joint line of silicone. Articulation joints are a type of control joint that alleviates stress on the wall from movement resulting around the use of these areas or stronger exposure to the elements.  Please contact Bonnyrigg Tiles for any further inquiries.
